The Perfect 3-Night Los Barriles Itinerary

How we'd spend a long weekend in our little corner of Baja

Three nights might not sound like much, but Los Barriles is unusually good at short vacations.

You don't need a packed schedule, a rental car full of luggage, or six restaurant reservations. In fact, trying to cram too much into a trip here rather defeats the point.

So, if you've got three nights in Los Barriles, here's how we'd do it.

And yes, you can absolutely ignore this entire itinerary and spend three days next to the pool drinking margaritas. We support that too.

DAY 1: Arrive & settle in 🌴

Today's objective: do very little.

Once you've checked into Hotel Hondo, unpack and go for a wander.

One of the best things about staying in central Los Barriles is that you really don't need a plan. The beach, cafés, restaurants and bars are all right outside your door.

Start by walking down to the Sea of Cortez. Take your shoes off. Wander the beach. Get the lay of the land.

If you've arrived hungry, you're also within easy striking distance of plenty of good first-day options. TEO’s TAVERNA is around the corner from the hotel for drinks and authentic Mexican fare, while El Viejo is one of our favorite stops for fish and shrimp tacos.

Then come back to Hotel Hondo, take a dip in the pool and congratulate yourself for not booking a Cabo resort.

Sunset 🍹

For your first proper Baja golden hour, grab a margarita or ice cold Topo Chico somewhere with a view.

The Round Bar at Playa del Sol is an old-school favorite - you can access the palapa directly from the beach. Just remember our standing advice about the Round Bar margaritas: two are plenty.

Dinner

Keep the first night easy.

La Casita is basically on Hotel Hondo's doorstep and is a great choice for sushi, seafood and pasta. it’s one of our longtime favorites in town. Also very nearby is Triny’s restaurante which offers a beautifully-decorated interior dining room serving classic Mexican dishes.

Then go to bed.

Tomorrow, we actually do things.

DAY 2: Beach Day 🌊

This is your day to understand why people accidentally move here.

Start with a breakfast and coffee at En Flores, Caleb's Cafe, or any one of the little local breakfast spots around town (there are lots!). Then head toward the water.

Morning: Beach Time

Spend a few hours on the Sea of Cortez.

Swim. Walk. Read a book. Rent a paddleboard. Snorkel. Do absolutely nothing.

If you want beach toys, SUPs, or snorkel gear, WAHOO WIND CO. can get you sorted.

This is intentionally unscheduled time. Los Barriles is much better when you leave some blank spaces in the day.

Lunch: Tacos, obviously 🌮

Head to PULLY’s BEACH CLUB for fish or shrimp tacos, fresh ceviche, and daily local specials with your toes in the sand.

It's simple, cheap and exactly the sort of lunch you should be eating in Baja.

Afternoon: Pick Your Flavor of Los Barriles

Here's where the itinerary depends a little on the day.

If the wind is blowing: this is the perfect time to try kiteboarding or wingfoiling. Complete beginners are welcome at our sister company, Wahoo Wind Co., and an introductory lesson is enough to get a taste without dedicating your whole vacation to learning.

If the wind isn't blowing: go back to the beach, rent a SUP, explore town, play pickleball, or simply retreat to the Hotel Hondo pool with a book and something cold.

Evening

Clean yourself up and make tonight your slightly-nicer dinner.

We recommend making the small trek to the fabulous Santuario Firewood Kitchen for outdoor desert atmosphere, wood-fired cooking and cocktails, or Beans & Rice is a colorful, lively and very Baja experience.

If there's still some life left in you afterwards, investigate DODO’s BEACH CLUB, SweetPea's, Smokey's, or whatever appears to be making noise.

DAY 3: Adventure Day 🤠

Today you earn your tacos.

There are dozens of adventures around Los Barriles, but if you've only got three nights, we'd narrow it to two very Baja choices:

OPTION #1: Go Fishing 🎣

Los Barriles is, at heart, a fishing town.

Book a half-day or full-day charter and head out onto the Sea of Cortez in search of whatever happens to be running.

Depending on how enthusiastically you want to fish, a half-day trip leaves enough afternoon for lunch, swimming and a nap. A full-day charter is the better choice if fishing is one of the main reasons you came.

Hotel Hondo can help organize trips with our favorite local captains. Our existing activity guide also recommends the 35' Cabo Vaquera for half- or full-day charters.

Expect an early start.

Very early.

Fortunately, watching the sun come up over the Sea of Cortez makes this considerably less offensive.

OPTION #2: ATV the Coast to Punta Pescadero 🏜️

If you'd rather stay on land, this may be our favorite little East Cape adventure.

Rent an ATV or side-by-side, pack a cooler, swimsuits, towels and plenty of water, then point yourself north.

A dirt road hugs the coast from Los Barriles toward Punta Pescadero, passing empty beaches covered in coral and seashells, little coves, desert landscapes and ridiculously blue water along the way.

And this is important:

Don't race to the destination.

The drive is the activity.

Stop when somewhere looks beautiful. Walk the beach. Swim. Look for whales. Take pictures. Crack open something cold.

Eventually you'll reach Punta Pescadero, a wonderfully old-school Baja hotel perched above the Sea of Cortez. Stop for a drink or something to eat if they're serving, enjoy the view, then slowly make your way home. That's also how we describe this trip in our Greater Area Day-Trip Guide, and Hotel Hondo guests can message us about arranging an ATV or side-by-side.

Pro tip: wear goggles or sunglasses, as well as something to cover your face. Pack a couple bottles of water, swimwear and beach towels.

Back in Town

Whichever adventure you chose, you might come home grubby, salty or both, so enjoy a hot shower at hotel hondo, and plan for a chill evening.

Tonight isn't the night that requires a complicated culinary experience. Grab seafood at La Gaviota, street tacos at Tacos Guss, or simply follow whichever place looks busy.

You've done enough.

DAY 4: One Last Baja Morning ☀️

Wake up naturally, grab a coffee, and walk down to the beach one last time.

If you've got a later departure, have a proper breakfast or brunch. La Playa RESTAURANTE is a good option when you have time to linger, particularly if a beachfront meal and one last vacation cocktail sound better than rushing toward the airport.

Otherwise, have coffee, take another swim, sit beside the Hotel Hondo pool, pack your suitcase and begin discussing when you're coming back.

Because three nights is enough time to see Los Barriles.

But it’s not enough time to be finished with it.

A Few Final Tips

Don't overschedule. One real activity per day is plenty.

Book fishing and ATV rentals ahead when town is busy. We can help arrange both.

Leave room for weather. Wind is an activity here.

Ask us what's happening. Restaurant hours change, musicians appear, fishing gets hot, the wind switches on, somebody throws a party, and half the fun of Los Barriles is figuring out what's happening this week.

And if three nights somehow turns into five, we've got plenty more ideas.
